Since coming to Canberra from London in 1962, 101-year-old Len Dixon has been a significant part of its then tiny but now massive tournament bridge scene. Within a single year he and three teammates were the first-ever ACT representatives in the annual interstate open teams championship. They expectedly finished last; but his many subsequent appearances at that annual event did earn a few gold medals. Now almost though not quite retired as a player he can look back on a good number of successes in national, state and club events.
He has contributed in various roles, both local and national to the governance of organised bridge, and was among the pioneers of (inter alia) tournament daily bulletins, some of which he edited, and the Epson world-wide bridge pairs which he suggested to the late Jaime Ortiz Patino, the President of the World Bridge Federation.
In 1965 he was the tournament director at the inaugural Australia Day Congress which eventually became the Summer Festival of Bridge in Canberra, a major event on the Australian Bridge Federation’s annual calendar.
Since 1968, Len has written the bridge column in The Canberra Times, which has highlighted ACT players and their achievements and publicised ACT events. Like many other periodicals around the world, that newspaper no longer has space for its bridge and chess columns. He hopes, however, to continue to entertain his Canberra readers and provide support to Canberra bridge as he has for the last 55 years with fortnightly online columns on this website.
